I mean, for the US alone, that REALLY doesn't make any sense; look at how the accents vary. I grew up in the west where the accents in the words focused on the consonants, but then moved to the Virginia area where the vowels get a whole lot more attention.

For example, back West, the capital of the USA was Wahshintn Dee Cee (okay, exaggeration, at least that’s how I grew up talking); and out East (people actually say this) Whoarsheentun (usually without the D.C. because they’re much farther from the state of Washington…)

Why can't people just -learn- proper English?

Apparently, it's not a new thing. From the Sunday Times Spell Check book (published 1993):

"Once a year, it seems, there is a fresh effort to simplify spelling, and to introduce words like 'naw' (gnaw), 'dum' (dumb), and 'det' (debt). Speling made eezy sounds like a good idea, but so far, every effort has finished on the junk pile. Even the Simplifyd Speling Society (sic) has difficulty getting its message across. One of their press releases began, 'Aulmoest evrithing that we reed iz tiypskript at sum staej...' Well, bak to the droring bord..."
